IPL 2021: The undefeated CSK returns to top. RCB Kohli, 1st Indian batsman to score 10,000 T20 runs.
What a wonderful weekend competition!
First of all, Delhi Capitals beat Rajasthan Royals by 33 runs. RR continued to lose wickets at regular intervals in the 155-run chase. Skipper Sanju Samson remained unbeaten on 70 but it was not enough to win the match for RR. Apart from Samson, all the other RR batsmen struggled against Delhi's bowling attack with Mahipal Lomror being the only other batsman to go into double figures.
SRH vs PBKS:
KL Rahul-led PBKS managed to score 125/7 in 20 overs on a slow wicket and tight bowing by SRH. Jason Holder(3/19) remained a key bowler for Hyderabad, emerged as the most successful bowler with his three wickets.
In reply, Sunrisers lost half of their side in 13 overs, slipping to 60 for five. Jason Holder scored a 29-ball 47 not out but it was not enough in the end. For Punjab, South African batsman Aiden Markram (27) was the top-scorer, while skipper KL Rahul contributed with run-a-ball 21 at the top.
Hyderabad are still at the bottom of the points table with eight defeats in nine games and their hopes of playoff qualification have almost ended.
The undefeated CSK
Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni set a new Indian Premier League (IPL) record of taking the most catches by a wicketkeeper during the Match 38 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Abu Dhabi.
Dhoni played his part in the dismissals of Venkatesh Iyer and Dinesh Karthik, taking two catches off the bowling of Shardul Thakur and Josh Hazlewood, respectively, to overtake Dinesh Karthik on the list of wicketkeepers with most catches in the IPL. Dhoni now has 116 catches as a wicketkeeper in the IPL.
Ravindra Jadeja took the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 by storm when he smashed a whirlwind 20 runs in four balls in the 19th over off Prasidh Krishna which helped Chennai Super Kings (CSK) edge past Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
The win helped CSK claim the top spot in the IPL points table for the time being. The all-rounder's explosive innings of 22 runs in eight deliveries earned special praise from former cricketers like S Badrinath, who even termed Jadeja as the best finisher in the world. He wrote, "Currently the best finisher in T20's is Ravindra Jadeja."
'Lord Shardul' Takes Over Again
Shardul Thakur bowled a brilliant spell during the match. In his 4 overs, he conceded just 20 runs while delivering 1 maiden over. He also picked 2 crucial wickets. The right-arm medium pacer dismissed the in-form opener, Venkatesh Iyer. Later, he also dismissed Andre Russell.
Meanwhile, upon witnessing Thakur’s sensational bowling against KKR, the Indian cricket fans were all praises for ‘Lord Shardul’. Shardul Thakur earned himself the tag of ‘Lord Shardul’ after his performance during India’s tour of Australia in the 2020-21 season. With the victory, CSK moved to the top of the IPL 2021 points table.
RCB vs MI:
Coming to the last game of the weekend. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) all-rounder Glenn Maxwell played a pivotal role with both bat and ball as they thumped Mumbai Indians (MI) by 54 runs in Dubai on Sunday.
The Challengers were in a spot of bother, losing Devdutt Padikkal in the second over. Virat Kohli partnered with KS Bharat to stage an outstanding comeback before Glenn Maxwell stole the show with his all-round hitting, including a couple of reverse sweeps.
The Australian cricketer, who has been in good form ever since joining RCB, once again led the batting from the front to propel Bangalore to a challenging total. Glenn Maxwell played a valuable hand of 56 runs from 37 deliveries, including six boundaries and three sixes to take RCB to 165 runs.
"To be able to have a full pre-season with my state side Victoria, put in a lot of work on my bowling and starting to see the rewards now," he said.
Purple cap holder Harshal Patel took a breathtaking hat-trick against defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday to help Royal Challengers Bangalore win the match 39 of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) by 54 runs in Dubai. The RCB bowler dismissed Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Rahul Chahar in three successive balls in the 17th over to achieve this amazing feat. Patel broke the backbone of the MI batting line-up to put his team in the driver's seat while defending a target of 166 runs.
MI were all-out for 111 in 18.1 overs, losing 10 wickets for 54 runs after being 57 for no loss at one stage. Skipper Virat Kohli won the ‘Battle of Bosses’ against his national team deputy Rohit Sharma as RCB with 12 points are back in the playoff contention while MI with three successive defeats are now in a real spot of bother at the seventh spot in the eight-team table.
Virat Kohli - Mr. Milestone
Virat Kohli brought the aggressive facet of his game to the fore at the start of the Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) innings against the Mumbai Indians (MI).
Kohli's 51-run knock helped RCB set a target of 166 for MI in Sunday night's IPL 2021 encounter. The Bangalore bowlers then bowled out the Rohit Sharma-led side for 111 runs to romp home by 54 runs.
The 32-year-old is the second man after West Indies' Chris Gayle to reach the landmark in both T20 and one-day international cricket.
The RCB captain got to the mark after pulling Jasprit Bumrah for six in his knock of 51 from 42 balls, joining Gayle, Keiron Pollard, Shoaib Malik and David Warner as the other players to have scored 10,000 runs in the shortest format.
Kohli has a total of 10,038 runs from 314 games at an average of 41.65 in T20s, with 3,159 of those coming while playing for India. He has scored five hundreds in the format, all for RCB.
SRH vs RR: Rajasthan Royals are still very much in the race for a playoff spot but their opponents, SunRisers Hyderabad, need a miracle to get into the top four.
SRH have won just one match this season, having played nine games and rock bottom of the league with only two points. Mathematically, they still have a chance to qualify for the playoffs but they will need some results going their way and winning rest of their matches.
On the other hand,RR's batters had a tough time against Delhi Capitals with only captain Samson making a meaningful contribution. Others will need to support him and put their hands up if RR are to have any chance of reaching the playoffs.
