Match50: Birthday / Match day
A top-of-the-table clash in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) sees the Delhi Capitals (DC) take on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 50 in Dubai on Monday, October 4.
A top-two spot hangs in the balance, with DC yet to face the third-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the second time in IPL 2021. This game, as well as the DC vs RCB clash, will be crucial in deciding the shape of the playoff battle, which is nearing its conclusion.
Both CSK and DC have played some excellent cricket in the UAE leg of IPL 2021 to sustain their momentum from the first leg. The Men in Yellow fell to a heavy defeat against the Rajasthan Royals in their previous game, in which they rested a couple of key players. However, CSK are among the most in-form tournaments and should be back to their best after getting the inevitable bad game out of the way.
Rishabh Pant talked up the opportunity to play against his idol, MS Dhoni. The two keeper-captains will fall into the spotlight once again as they aim to lead their respective teams to a historic playoff appearance.
Dhoni has been a class apart with his bowling changes and field placements in IPL 2021. Although he didn't have anything in his magic box of tricks to counter Yashasvi Jaiswal, Evin Lewis and Shivam Dube in the previous game, the CSK skipper has consistently come up with game-changing decisions.
The DC vs CSK clash could come down to a purely tactical battle since both teams have similar playing XIs. A solid opening combination, a capable middle order, two quality finger-spinners and a well-rounded pace attack are characteristics of both sides, whose team composition has helped them establish themselves a cut above the rest in IPL 2021.
Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant (C/WK), Steve Smith, Shimron Hetmyer, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Avesh Khan.
Chennai Super Kings:
Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf Du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (C/WK), DJ Bravo/Sam Curran, Josh Hazlewood/Lungi Ngidi, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar/KM Asif.
RCB vs PBKS
Let’s look back at the games that qualified for the playoffs last week.
Chasing a challenging total, PBKS openers gave their side a blistering start. Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul switched 91 runs for the first wicket. However, as was the case in the previous game no one from Punjab Kings’ middle order could live up to the expectation.
Mayank went on to score 57 runs in 42 balls while KL Rahul scored 39 runs in 35 balls. Aiden Markram also chipped in with 20 runs. Shahrukh Khan also played a little cameo in the end but could not take his team through.
Maxwell has shown he isn’t done yet after Royal Challengers Bangalore showed faith in him. This season he has reignited his form and on Sunday, he exacted revenge, thrashing PBKS bowlers en route 33-ball 57, scoring his third consecutive half-century.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side is currently placed at the 3rd spot in the points table, after winning 8 out of the 12 matches they have played in the 2021 IPL season. Maxwell and the RCB side will next be seen on the field on 6th October 2021 when they lock horns with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise.
RCB are just one win away from qualifying for the IPL 2021 playoffs whereas PBKS with their five-wicket win over KKR have kept their qualifying prospects alive and need to keep pushing hard till their last breath, requiring two wins in two encounters.
Current playoff scenarios for KKR, PBKS, MI, RR:
Kolkata Knight Riders – Currently 4th on Points Table
Simple Equation for them, win final match, book the place & Qualify for Playoffs. Their superior NET RUN RATE will take them through with win.
With a win over SRH, KKR now need to win the last game vs RR to qualify for the playoffs.
The situation will get difficult if KKR lose the last game. If they lose to RR, their superior NRR still may take them through provided MI, RR lose 1 of their 2 remaining matches
Punjab Kings – Currently 5th on Points Table
PBKS is in a difficult place now. They just have 1 match left. They are currently at 5th on points table but precariously placed
First thing first – PBKS have to win last match vs CSK & that too by big margin
Then they will have to wait for the results of other matches.
OVERALL very less chances for them to QUALIFY & BOOK PLAYOFF SPOT.
Rajasthan Royals – Currently 6th on Points Table
RR has to win both games if they have to qualify
RR vs MI on Tuesday: Victory in this will mean Mumbai Indians crash out
RR vs KKR on Thursday: This can be a virtual knockout, victory for either of them will take them to playoffs provided RR beats MI as well
Mumbai Indians – Currently 7th on Points Table
Mumbai Indians are in a dangerous situation and could miss out even after winning their last two games. They have an NRR of -0.453, the lowest among the contenders and only big wins can take them to the playoffs.
MI face Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals, with the former already knocked out.
